It’s on again. The next BIG FREEFORM CONCERT comes to Kulcha on Thursday, May 27.
Again, we’re inviting musicians interested in exploring the boundaries between musical traditions and improvisation to share the stage with some of Perth’s most innovative and genre-bending players.
For this coming event, ruined-piano and accordion maestro, Ross Bolleter, (a last minute withdrawal from the March Freeform) will join us, as will electronic composer/performer, Matt Rösner (www.pablodali.net).
Like Freeform itself, the strategies for performance are constantly changing and evolving. For our May performance we will be revisiting an idea we’ve explored previously: “conducting games”:
1. “On the Cards” – the conductor/s will hold up card cues to which the players will respond spontaneously.
2. Percussion only – a conducted piece for percussion instruments. (Please bring a percussion instrument of your choice. Any object that can be hit, scraped, or otherwise percussed, qualifies - including found objects, toys etc).
We always welcome new ideas for Freeform, so please if you have you have some fantastic idea (interesting will do) please feel free to drop me a line (citizencainm@bigpond.com) or better still, put an entry on the Freeform blog www.freeform.net.au.
On a general note, I’m always keen to encourage players to be prepared for the unexpected, which will hopefully include, at some points at least, playing outside of your ‘comfort zone’. The best moments of Freeform are often the surprising and the unpredictable. Keeping an open and responsive mind to the moment is a way of differentiating Freeform from other types of performances or gigs we may do. At least this is something to aim for.
And a final point, Freeform relies on the support of players, but equally on its audience. So please, tell your friends (email them!), acquaintances, people next door and relatives to come along and experience first-hand this fantastic event. See you there.
Mark Cain (and Alexis Courtin).
