James Baker first started drumming for a Perth band called Black Sun (1973-1974) and then The Slick City Boys (1974-1975).
In 1976 he was a founding member of The Geeks, one of Australia's first punk bands who unfortunately didn't leave any recorded material. After Dave Faulkner joined the band, they became known as the Victims. Baker also drummed for The Scientists, Hoodoo Gurus, Beasts of Bourbon, The Dubrovniks etc etc. The James Baker Experience was short lived (1985-1986) and they recorded one single with Baker on vocals. The Troggs "I Can't Control Myself" and the original "Born to be Punched".
